Magnolia Blossom - Whitecroft201 viewsI love Magnolias. Great, huge, pure white flowers. It's a shame that they seem to fall apart so quickly, so it's hard to bring them in the house for a big floral display. (Unless there's some secret that only Southern belles learn, while drinking juleps.) This magnolia bud is in our large tree, Whitecroft, on a hot summer afternoon.

Marjorie 1 At Starbucks in South Australia1419 viewsCathy wrote, "Did my daughterly duty yesterday and took Mother to Colonades which is near where she lives, I think I did some 120 kms just doing that. We had coffee at Starbucks, the first one opened in South Australia and it has to be miles from where I live, oh well just need to wait until they open more nearer me."

The Old and The New218 viewsThe magnolia tree in our front garden -- a new blossom, and an old. The magnolia is an ancient genus that evolved before bees appeared. The flowers are designed to be pollinated by beetles. This is a Southern Magnolia, or Magnolia grandiflora.

Southern Magnolia Blossom132 viewsThis is on our large Southern Magnolia tree, photographed August 4 2006. We're having several new blossoms a day, and they scent the evening air with the gentle smell of --- well, of magnolias.

Magnolia Grandiflora -- Southern Magnolia122 viewsThe large petals on the flower fall away, and the "fruit" is left inside. Here's a young flower, and the "fruit" from a old flower. The huge flowers smell wonderful, but fall to bits if we try to cut them and put them inside in a vase.

Part of the very, very loooooooooong walk to the M & S180 viewsWe were told, by the signs on the M1 Southbound, that there was an M&S at Trowell. Well liar, liar, pants on fire. The M&S was on the other side of the motorway, and there were no lifts on either side. It was an unbearably painful walk, complete with buckets and leaks.

The Stairway, M1 Southbound at Trowell163 viewsThis is the stairway to climb to the bridge over the motorway. The signs indicate there's a Marks and Spencer at the M1 southbound, but it's actually on the other side of the motorway. You need to climb these stairs (no lift) to get to the bridge, and then repeat the process on the other side of the motorway. Very misleading in my opinion. But not in the opinion of Moto.
