Nevsky Prospect - St. Petersburg911 viewsThis is where my wallet was stolen. This is one of the main streets in St. Petersburg, Russia. Marjorie and I were walking up the street (same direction as the girl with the yellow shoulder bag) on a sunny spring afternoon. A large man on a cell phone came out from behind the bus shelter (on the left in this photo) and blocked my path. Others crowded me from behind when I stopped suddenly, and my wallet was gone. The police didn't really care -- this is apparently typical in St. Petersburg.May 02, 2007

Nevsky Prospect - St. Petersburg5071 viewsTo cross the street in either direction on Nevsky Prospect -- one of the main streets in St. Petersburg -- you need to go into this pedestrian underpass. When we did so, on a bright spring afternoon (our wedding anniversary), my camera was stolen. I'd just entered the underpass, and as my eyes adjusted to the gloom someone bumped into me quite hard, and I knew my camera was gone when my left shoulder suddenly didn't feel the weight. But there was a crowd, and no obvious villan.May 02, 2007

27th Police District, St. Petersburg867 viewsMarjorie going into the 27th Police District to report the theft of my camera --- for the second time. The first form they gave us, right after the incident, was just a lost-and-found form, so we had to enlist the help of our hotel, and go back a second day. The inside of the police station looks like the waiting room for the Gulag.May 02, 2007

Kiko687 viewsThis is our last photo of Kiko. I didn't want to bother him by getting up close with the camera, but did want some photographs of Kiko on his 12th birthday, May 1, 2007. He died later that evening, on the couch, and with Marjorie and me at his side. Marjorie asked, "Why do I miss him so much?" But just do a search on this website for "Kiko" to look at all of his pictures. He always made us laugh.May 02, 2007

Kiko in the Garden625 viewsMay 1, 2007 -- Kiko's 12th Birthday. He'd had surgery about a month earlier to remove part of his lung: biopsies, x-rays, and CAT scans had been inconclusive. Unfortunately he had lung cancer. He was fine up until his birthday. He wanted to spend most of the day outside -- fortunately it was warm and sunny. He came in at 7:00 PM, and then died, with Marjorie and me with him, at 11:00 PM. On the couch, his favourite place.May 02, 2007
