The second deck was built of soft wood and stained, but the paint kept peeling off (you can see the latest coat on the right hand side -- the grey paint applied in 2003). The new decking is guaranteed for 25 years. Installed in August 2005, so we have until August 2030. I will be 81.

Nana and Baba sold their Kealaolu Avenue house circa 1947, and felt they had enough money to move into a hotel for the rest of their lives. And that's what they did: they moved into the Niumalu Hotel, on the site of the present Hilton Hawaiian Village. That lasted about a year.
